#4481, Fantas Variations
Hear Italian composer Caterina Barbieri’s pattern-based electronic work, “Fantas,” and new acoustic and electronic collaborative variations on that piece by friends and colleagues, composers Evelyn Saylor and Kara-Lis Coverdale, along with her former guitar professor, Walter Zanetti. From Berlin-based Evelyn Saylor, who is a singer, performer, pianist, and synth player from NYC, listen to variations on Barbieri’s “Fantas” for vocal ensemble – Lyra Pramuk, Annie Garlid, Stine Janvin, and herself - “joining forces to express the choral, psychedelic and vitalistic nature of the piece.” Zanetti’s turn translates the gestures of “Fantas” into patterns for electric guitar. Then, there’s the “Fantas Morbida” for piano by Canadian composer Kara-Lis Coverdale which captures the dreamlike and mutable nature of “Fantas,” but manages to make the relentless patterns a little bit more gentle.
Plus, hear some of the work of said friends and colleagues - like music of composer and vocalist Lyra Pramuk, from her record, Fountain, which sounds “like Roomful of Teeth on Autotune" (with thanks to sound design and technical guru, Jeremy Bloom.) Listen to Leider, an art-song combo of Berlin musicians led by composer Rishin Singh, which features vocalists Annie Gårlid and Stine Sterne, as well as Derek Shirley on cello. Plus, there's a piece from the Sacred Harp songbook by Evelyn Saylor, and similarly-derived music by Berlin-based composer Holly Herndon. - Caryn Havlik
