You can hear two musical depictions of journalism during this evening’s first hour, “Tabloid” by Ferde Grofe and “Newseel in Five Shots” William Schuman.
Grofe’s “Tabloid” is a suite subtitled ‘Four Pictures of a Modern Newspaper.’ Its four movements ‘Run of the News,’ ‘Sob Sister,’ ‘Comic Strip,’ and ‘Going to Press’ The suite catch the hubbub and drama of a time when New York was home to dozens of newspapers. Jan Stulen conducts the Metropole Orchestra. The five movements of Schuman’s “Newsreel” have equally evocative titles: ‘Horse Race,’ ‘Fashion Show,’ ‘Tribal Dance,’ ‘Monkeys at the Zoo,’ and ‘Parade.’ The Keystone Wind Ensemble is the band, performing under the baton of Jack Stamp.
Pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Isaac Stern, violist Jaime Laredo, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma join forces in Gabriel Fauré’s early work, the Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 15. This elegant quartet can be heard presented live by member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center at Alice Tully Hall on February 11th and 13th.
Gerard Schwarz conducts his Seattle Symphony forces and pianist Patricia Mchaelian in Ernest Bloch’s Concerto grosso No. 1 with piano obbligato. Then we enjoy two violin concertos back-to-back, one from the 18th century and one from the 20th. First, Rainer Kuchl stars in Haydn’s Violin Concerto No. 1, Adam Fischer leading the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra; second, Hilary Hahn hold forth as only she can in Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto in D, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner.
