On Wednesday, February 16th, the New York Festival of Song presents a tribute to Fats Waller and Dorothy Fields at Merkin Hall. Soprano Judy Kaye and pianist Steven Blier are two of the artists participating. You can hear them this evening, along with baritone William Sharp, cellist Sara Sant’Ambrogio, and pianist Michael Barret, as they present eight songs and duets by Leonard Bernstein. What’s not to love?
Today is the anniversary of Richard Wagner’s 1883 death in Venice, where he had been residing with his family in the Palazzo Vendramin on the Grand Canal since the previous year. Donald Runnicles conducts the Staatskapelle Dresden in ‘Siegfried’s Funeral Music’ from “Götterdämmerung at the top of our second hour. ‘Wotan’s Farewell’ and the ‘Magic Fire Music’ from “Die Walküre” follow a bit later.
Meanwhile, Howard Hanson conducts the Eastman-Rochester Symphony in Virgil Thomson’s “Symphony on a Hymn Tune.” Listeners familiar with Southern Baptist hymnody will recognize material derived from “How Firm a Foundation,” “Yes, Jesus Loves Me,” and even “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”
