A Birthday: Michael Nyman

Remember Jane Campion’s 1991 film “The Piano”? Michael Nyman (born this day in 1944—cheers, Michael!) wrote the film score and later developed his Piano Concerto from the movie’s themes.
This evening we hear Nyman’s concerto performed by pianist John Lenehan, Takuo Yuasa conducting the Ulster Orchestra. The one-movement work has four episodes with these titles: “The Beach”; “The Woods”; The Hut”; and “The Release.” Lovers of the film will find themselves back in its 19th-century New Zealand location, remembering the plot, as they listen.
Pianists Martha Argerich and Nelson Freire can be heard at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, March 30th, performing Brahms, Ravel, Schubert, and Lutoslawski, as well as the work you can hear them perform right here this evening—Rachmaninoff’s Suite No. 2 for Two Pianos, Opus 17.
