The Ballet Russe premiered “Pulcinella” on this day in 1920. The story of the little puppet was a big success. Igor Stravinsky’s music has been a big winner ever since.
This evening we hear Stravinsky’s 1922 Suite on music from the “Pulcinella”ballet score, Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic with his customary zest and aplomb. Riccardo Muti leads the Vienna Philharmonic in more dance music, this time Franz Schubert’s score for the “Rosamunde”’s ballet.
Violinist Jaime Laredo often turns his hand(s) to conducting as well, and tonight leads the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1, with Joseph Kalichstein as the featured soloist.
