A Birthday: Richard Wagner

It’s Richard Wagner’s birthday (1813), so you know whose music we’ll be enjoying for part of the evening. An unusual instrumental version of “The Ride of the Valkyries” starts us off.
Later on, Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony will thrill us with the “Siegfried Idyll.” But perhaps best of this evening’s Wagner offerings is the “Wesendonk Lieder” by the great mezzo-soprano, Dame Janet Baker, ably supported by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Bernard Haitink. Other Wagner works as well, but stay tuned and be surprised.
There’s some Haydn to be heard: Symphony No. 8, “Le soir,” by the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble. Also some Handel, and Chopin, and Ravel, and—the ever-popular “more.”
