Summer Solstice

While it felt like summer before, today is the true summer solstice, so we pay tribute to the season with Gerswin’s “Summertime” and Vivaldi’s ‘Summer’ from the “Four Seasons.”
The Alice Artzt Guitar Trio members are the perpetrators of the Gershwin, and Giuliano Carmignola’s Baroque violin is the star of the Venice Baroque Orchestra’s version of the Vivaldi. Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3 makes an appearance this evening, as Neeme Jarvi conducts the Detroit Symphony. The astute listener will recognize in the opening of the third movement the theme of “Fanfare for the Common Man.”
Haydn’s Concerto for Two Horns in E-flat is played by hornists Michael Thompson and Richard Watkins, along with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Christopher Warren-Green. Mozart lovers can look forward to Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Phil’s version of his 29th Symphony. Debussy’s Piano Trio is on the menu as well, as is the Rachmaninoff “Variations on a Theme of Corelli.”
