Evening Music’s first hour brings us violinist Pinchas Zukerman, whose birthday it is (1948), plays Mozart’s Violin Sonata in F, K. 377, supported by pianist Marc Neikrug. Pierre Boulez and the Ensemble InterContemporain offer a vibrant reading of Stravinsky’s “Dumbarton Oaks” Concerto.
There were years during the seventies and eighties when Russian pianist Bella Davidovich dominated the airwaves. We bring her back again this evening, in honor of her 77th birthday. She is joined by her son, violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky, in Ravel’s posthumous Violin Sonata. Ravel’s earliest attempt at chamber work or the sonata form, this single-movement work was composed in 1897 but not published until 1975, after it had been discovered among his papers.
