Deborah Voigt Sings American Songs

Pianist Brian Zeger is a guest this evening. He will discuss recording American songs with soprano Debora Voigt, and we will hear a sampling from their recently released CD.
Speaking of new recordings, we will also listen to Osvaldlo Golijov’s acclaimed new oratorio “Ayre,” dedicated to and sung by soprano Dawn Upshaw, who is supported by the chamber ensemble, The Andalucian Dogs. The CD jacket calls this a “dazzling journey around the Jewish Mediterranean, merging Sephardic melodies, Semitic electronica, Arabic poetry and utterly sensual songs.” Who could resist such fare?
On our listening menus is the more traditional entrée of Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 in E-flat, with Donald Runnicles conducting the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. The group will be performing Mozart’s requiem at Carnegie Hall on the 27th.
