The Royal Treatment

François Couperin, composer of many a royal concert for Louis XIV, gets the royal treatment himself this evening, this being his birthday (1668).
We hear Couperin’s own “Sarabande la majesteuse” played by harpist Andrew Lawrence-King. Then Angela Hewitt plays Maurice Ravel’s majestic and magical “Le tombeau de Couperin,” a pianistic memorial.
Oboist Heinz Holliger is joined by several friends in the “Concert royal” No. 3 in A, before the evening’s end.
Barry Tuckwell tucks into Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat with enthusiasm, ably assisted by the London Symphony Orchestra members under Istvan Kertesz.
