#4515, A Tribute to Julian Bream
Listen to a New York Guitar Festival tribute to Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream, who died in August of 2020, at the age of 87. Based in England, Bream was a multi-instrumentalist (piano, cello, guitar, lute) and was a Jazz afficionado, having grown up on his father’s Django Reinhardt 78s. He was also an admirer of Indian Classical Music, and a great proponent of improvisation, (Tom Cole, NPR) and there is an excellent 2003 documentary, My Life in Music, about the concert artist.
For this New Sounds show, hear a little bit of Julian Bream and a lot of his influence, including new works written and recorded especially for the 2021 New York Guitar Festival, from Renaissance lute to classical guitar, and guitar with electronics, all in honor of the late musician and educator. Listen to Bream’s student Laura Snowden and her memorial piece, called “Home,” which was inspired by her lessons at Bream’s house. There’s also new music by Dutch lutenist Jozef van Wissem entitled, “Fancy a Nosecap,” which was how Bream used to ask if anyone was up for one more drink before the night was done. Then, hear a work called “Moonou” by Korean guitarist Jiji for guitar and electronic processing. Plus, hear South African guitarist Derek Gripper’s piece inspired by Julian Bream’s love of John Dowland. And more.
The 2021 online series, “Remembering Julian Bream,” includes commissions by a group of stellar classical guitarists, lutenists and composers is on the Festival’s Youtube channel.
