Listen to some dance party grooves rooted in North Africa, from Moroccan trance and Tuareg "desert rock" of Niger to East African Pop from Ethiopia and Sudan in music by L.A. producer Dexter Story, Niger’s Les Filles de Illighidad, Paris-based Gnawa Youmala, and Belgian band Azmari.
Hear mesmerizing Tuareg folk from Niger by Les Filles de Illighidad (the village Illighadad is central to everything about the band, from their repertoire, the way they perform, the poetry they recite, even the way they sing, (Bandcamp). Les Filles de Illighidad has a bit of a desert rock feel with the loping threes deployed as a propulsive pulse, and was recorded at Pioneer Works. Then, listen to Paris-based band Gnawa Youmala who play traditional Gnawa music with a modern twist, including violin and referencing the Bambara people of Mali. There’s also music from the Algerian five-piece "desert rock" or Tuareg band Imarhan.
Plus, listen to danceable and powerful grooves in East African-influenced music from L.A. producer Dexter Story and featuring singer Alsarah, who is a self-proclaimed practitioner of East-African Retro-Pop music. Also, hear music from Belgian band Azmari, and their combination of West African Afrobeat and East African pop, especially Ethiojazz of the 1970’s. All that, and new music from New York-based Innov Gnawa, who perform the trancey and rhythmic traditional healing music of Morocco. - Caryn Havlik
