#4531, New Releases, August 2021

New Sounds | Aug 31, 2021

It's the most wonderful time of the month  - the showcasing of some of the finest new music to come to into the ole' inboxes. There’s new music by German keyboardist, composer, and producer Max Richter, by Oslo/Berlin-based sax player Bendik Giske, and from the NY-based experimental chamber ensemble 9 Horses.

Acoustic experimental chamber group 9 Horses is mandolin player Joe Brent, violinist Sara Caswell, and bassist Andrew Ryan. On their latest, Omegah, the New York-based trio has birthed tunes with acoustic and electric textures that draw from classical, jazz, folk, bluegrass, and pop, all largely improvised. Listen to the album’s centerpiece, “Max Richter's Dreams.” Then, from the German composer Max Richter, hear music from Exiles, some re-imaginings of tracks composed by Richter for a Virginia Woolf-inspired ballet.

Then, listen to music by Norwegian saxophonist, composer and artist Bendik Giske, off of his record, Cracks. On it, he combines extended techniques (circular breathing) and sometimes invasive microphone placement (in his throat!) that result in enveloping saxophone-sourced sound sculptures that might owe much to techno and queer culture, along with a bit of Jon Hassell fourth world ideas.

There’s also music from Italian jazz pianist and keyboardist Rossano Baldini, who writes for film and television, and also plays Bercandeon – an accordion-like instrument. However, in 2021, he took on the moniker HUMANBEING for his project as an electronic composer making synthetic soundscapes. Hear one of those, called “Blood.” Plus, music from a collaboration between classical Indian legend, composer and sitarist Shujaat Husain Khan and Iranian vocalist Katayoun Goudarzi, This Pale, which combines Iranian/Persian and Indian classical music traditions. And more.
