Listen to music for guitar and strings, from Guatemalan cellist Mabe Fratti, Douglas J. Cuomo’s work for the Aizuri Quartet and versatile guitarist Nels Cline, and a piece by Norwegian experimental guitarist Terje Rypdal.
From American composer Douglas J. Cuomo, who might be best known for his TV music, including the theme music for Sex And The City, listen to his latest recording, Seven Limbs. Based on an ancient Buddhist purification practice, the album-length work features the Aizuri String Quartet and electric guitarist Nels Cline of the band Wilco.
Then, listen to new music by Guatemalan-born, Mexico City-based cellist, singer, producer, and songwriter Mabe Fratti. It’s from her outer-worldly 2021 record, Será Que Ahora Podremos Entendernos? and features her cello run through an array of effects, along with electric guitar.
There’s also music from Norway’s Terje Rypdal for electric guitar with string trio. Plus, electric string quartet ETHEL plays originals with guitarists Kaki King and John King from a 2015 New Sounds Live concert, and more. -Caryn Havlik
