From the improvisational band and variable orchestra, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, there’s music from their latest, Angels Over Oakanda*, a four song suite, and their first album in four years. [*Oakanda refers to a section in the Bay Area (Oakland) where Black Culture is appreciated and nurtured.] With influences ranging from funk to metal, cosmic jazz to sweet soul and avant-garde experimentation, founder Greg Tate likes to say “The Burnt Sugar Arkestra is also a territory band, a neo-tribal thang, a community hang…” (Princeton Arts.) They work together via conducted improvisation / conduction, here on a work, “Repatriation of the Midnight Moors, inna Oakanda” in a remix by electroacoustic drummer and arranger Marque Gilmore.
Hear some of Portals, Vol. 1 (Mourning) by saxophonist/composer Caroline Davis and her quintet, along with an improvising string quartet, including violinist Mazz Swift and cellist Mariel Roberts. Davis channels her own grief at the sudden passing of her father and of our collective mourning through the pandemic, in music that followed three distinct themes, all tied to recovering from the effects of trauma. Then, from New York trio Ensemble Fanaa, hear music that bends and blends jazz and Moroccan trance music, centered around the use of the bass-register instrument, the guembri/sintir.
