Listen to the sounds of the subcontinent, with vocal music from Pakistani singer Ustad Saami, as well as instrumentals by Indian classical sarod player sarod virtuoso Amjad Ali Khan with Joe Walsh (The Eagles), and Amjad Ali Khan with classical guitarist Sharon Isbin as well. And more.
Ustad Saami, the master Pakistani singer, is the only vocal practitioner left in the world of surti, a centuries-old tradition. His unique style consists of a system which “divides each octave into forty-nine surti (microtones). [For comparison, European music theory divides the octave into twelve, and Hindustani theory has mostly agreed on twenty-two,” (The Quietus, 2021.)] All three of Ustad Saami’s albums have been produced by Grammy-winner, Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, The Good Ones, Zomba Prison Project). Accompanied by the master’s sons on harmonium, tabla and tambura, hear “Night Falls (Desert melody)” from 2021’s East Pakistan Sky, recorded live without overdubs at Ustad Saami’s rooftop home in Karachi.
Also, listen to South African guitarist Guy Buttery and Indian master musicians Mohd. Amjad Khan (tabla) & Mudassir Khan (sarangi), recorded during a spontaneous collaboration session in India, in the town of Gurgaon. The trio improvises on one of Guy Buttery’s tunes, “December Poems.” Then, there’s music from guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer Joe Walsh (The Eagles), and preeminent classical Sarod virtuoso and composer Amjad Ali Khan. Plus, virtuoso guitarist Sharon Isbin collaborates with Amjad Ali Khan, and his virtuoso sons Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash from their record, Strings for Peace. - Caryn Havlik
