#4559, Piano and "Orchestrations"

New Sounds | Nov 29, 2022

Hear small groups with big sounds with music by French duo Snowdrops, Polish duo Hania Rani and cellist Dobrawa Czocher, German outfit Secret of Elements, and American duo A Winged Victory for the Sullen.

French chamber group Snowdrops is an electro-acoustic duo of electronic keyboardist Mathieu Gabry and the Strasbourg-based multi-instrumentalist Christine Ott. Hear selections from their latest album Volutes, which puts Ott’s ondes Martenots and piano alongside violin, cello Mellotron and the viola of Anne Irène-Kempf.

Then, there’s music from German composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Johann Pätzold aka Secret of Elements where all keyboards are fair game, from piano and organ to groovy synths. The music reflects on challenges faced while aiding the Mediterranean refugee crisis, with themes ranging from the space probe Cassini (which burned up in Saturn’s upper atmosphere) to a piece built around an Indian mantra but performed on church organ as a tribute to a small child who drowned in the Mediterranean.

Listen to music by American duo A Winged Victory for the Sullen – the composer collaboration between Stars of the Lid founder Adam Wiltzie and L.A. composer Dustin O'Halloran. It’s from their 2021 record Invisible Cities, loosely inspired by Italo Calvino’s 1972 novel of the same name. Plus, hear new work by Polish duo of pianist-singer Hania Rani and cellist Dobrawa Czocher, fromtheir 2021 album, Inner Symphonies, and more. – Caryn Havlik
