Hear music with a late night jazz feeling, infused with groove and electronics by UK-based harpist Nala Sinephro, South African trombonist Malcolm Jiyane, and Turkish composer Berk Icli.
The London-based Caribbean-Belgian composer, producer and musician Nala Sinephro grew up playing fiddle and learned to play the pedal harp in secret. On her record, Space 1.8, she fuses meditative sounds, “spiritual jazz,” ambient loops, and electronic music. There’s also music by South African trombonist (and pianist) Malcolm Jiyane, who, as bandleader, delivers a jazz-funk dedication celebrating the creative force as inhabited by women in “Umkhumbi kaMa.”
Also, listen to music by New York-based Turkish producer, composer and pianist Berk Icli. Cinematic in scope, the textures sometimes approach spaghetti space-westerns, with their synths, bass-heavy soundscapes, and brass section. Then, hear music by Georgia Anne Muldrow, recording as Jyoti, who “Wanted to make a bebop experiment out of how astral travel to Benin could feel” and does on her 2020 record, Mama, You Can Bet!
Hear new music by trumpeter Steven Bernstein's Millenial Territory Orchestra which achieves alternately “interlocking parts and inexorable rhythmic undertow,” in its slow-motion funk or in its “vivid mind-movies” (the artist’s Bandcamp liner notes.)
