#4582, Works Premiered by the Bang On A Can All-Stars
Revisit just some of the new music premiered by the badass collective Bang on a Can All-Stars over the past many years with works by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir, artist, writer, and musician Jace Clayton, aka DJ Rupture, and guitarist and composer Bryce Dessner (of rock band The National). Some of these works were commissioned by the People’s Commissioning Fund, a precursor to crowdfunding undertaken by the Bang on a Can organization.
Listen to works from the commissioned series, Field Recordings, where composers were asked to find something old or record something new, and to respond with their own music, in dialogue with what they found. There is a piece by American composer Jace Clayton which brings together the recollections of the first work that the members of the Bang on Can All-Stars had memorized as kids. Then, listen to American environmentalist and composer Gabriella Smith’s commissioned work “Panitao,” which uses recordings of the Chilean “dawn chorus” – the peak of animal activity right around sunrise. Also, hear a piece by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir which uses a recording of walking through a field. Hear another work using found sound – in a piece by Bryce Dessner, it’s a 20th Century recording of poet Charles Olson reciting his work. All of these commissions are performed by the Bang on a Can All-Stars.
Listen to a motoric and clangorous piece by American composer Jeffrey Brooks, based on Bang on a Can co-founder and composer Michael Gordon’s “Treewatcher,” which reimagines Gordon’s piece, and features both the Bang on a Can All-Stars and the New York-based large ensemble Contemporaneous (conducted by David Bloom.) Plus, hear some of Memory Games from the Bang on a Can All-Stars collaborative record with composer Meredith Monk. - Caryn Havlik
