#4585, Analogue Electronics
There’s music by Berlin-based British violinist Simon Goff, Brooklyn-based vocalist/composer Arooj Aftab, Bosnian-born Swiss accordionist Mario Batkovic, and the Berlin-based artist and composer Floating Spectrum who combines field recordings with analogue synths. All of it is electronic music rooted in the analogue world, combining acoustic instruments and field recordings with processing and other synthesized sounds.
Listen to electroacoustic music by Berlin-based North Yorkshire-born violinist and electronic musician Simon Goff, from his album Vale, where he takes motoric riffs and layers them into swelling systems music. Then, listen to work by Mario Batkovic, a Swiss virtuoso accordion player born in Bosnia, in collaboration with British electronic music artist James Holden. Also, hear work from the Swiss-British composer Dominik Scherrer, from the score to the series, The Serpent (2021).
Hear a combination of synthesizers and everyday household objects in music by Berlin-based composer and audio technologist Floating Spectrum (aka Mei-Fang Liau.) There’s also a pairing of field recordings with found (or lost?) musical objects from the Berlin-based artist Melanie Velarde. Then, listen to an eerie and beautiful virtual chorus (of her own voice and loop pedals) along with analog synthesizers and electric guitar) in music by Brooklyn-based Pakistani composer Arooj Aftab from her record, Siren Islands.
There’s also music by modular synth fanatics, the duo of Garry Hughes & Harvey Jones, who operate as Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society. Plus, work for modular synth by composer, drummer, and modular synth experimenter Qasim Naqvi. -Caryn Havlik
