#4594, Southeast Asian Percussion in Western Music

New Sounds | Feb 16, 2022

Hear some of the gong-chime instruments of Thailand and Cambodia, along with music that uses Javanese gamelan and Balinese gamelan in music by (mostly) Western composers.

There’s music by Irish composer Linda Buckley -  her 2016 work, “Ekstasis” which combines medieval harmony, ambient electronic music and the hypnotic atmosphere of Javanese Gamelan. The piece uses vibraphone, Thai gongs and electronics and features percussionist Joby Burgess from his record, Pioneers of Percussion.

Listen to a selection from the score to the series, The Serpent (2021) by Swiss-British composer Dominik Scherrer which uses sounds of gong-chime instruments of Thailand. Then, hear music by Mike Oldfield which uses the metallic percussion of Cambodian music. There's music by Taiwanese pipa player Yufeng Chung that incorporates Indonesian gamelan and western electric guitar, plus music from NYC-based Patrick Grant who serves his post-minimalism with a twist of Rock and Balinese gamelan. And more. - Caryn Havlik
