Korean composer and producer Park Jiha makes new music for ancient instruments, and uses saenghwang, the Korean mouth organ, and the double-reed bamboo piri (like an oboe) on her latest record, The Gleam, which Glitterbeat describes as a “meditation on the intersection of music and light.’ Listen to “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans,” a composition created as a live soundtrack for a movie of the same name, a silent black-and-white film.
There’s also a collaborative duet of Scottish smallpipes and Balkan kaba gaida by Scottish piper Brìghde Chaimbeul and Bulgarian piper Dimcho Enchev. Then, listen to a sliding, gliding dirge-like piece by American composer Viet Cuong, for Philadelphia-based saxophone quartet, PRISM. Also, hear work by Mario Batkovic, a Swiss virtuoso accordion player born in Bosnia, in collaboration with Montreal-based sax virtuoso Colin Stetson.
