#4611, With Evan Ziporyn, Ellen Reid Soundwalk
Composer/conductor/clarinetist Evan Ziporyn presents the fruits of his arranging - he’s worked up everything from Georgian choral music to David Bowie’s Blackstar. His latest record, Pop Channel, mostly focuses on the pop side of his musical life - some fifty years of American popular music from Jimi Hendrix’s Woodstock Improvisation to The Association to the B-52’s. Using all kinds of clarinets, from “little, big, really little, and really big” – from the soprano to the contrabass clarinet - Ziporyn plays both solo and multitracked clarinet with electronics, making sounds that many listeners may not even expect a clarinet should or could make. John Schaefer caught up with Evan Ziporyn at the Big Ears Festival 2022, where Ziporyn talks about taking on Earth Wind & Fire and Steely Dan and "embracing the drug-induced stasis" of some of these pop songs, ahem...looking at you, Paul McCartney and Wings.
Also, listen to some of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid’s Soundwalk, a GPS-enabled work which is unique to each park location where it has been enabled. (The work was also recently enabled in Knoxville, TN at the 2022 Big Ears Festival.)
