#4618, Music With Gamelan Instruments
Hear music that incorporates Indonesian gamelan, including work by Lou Harrison, Irish composer Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, and 13-piece multi-national band, Balungan, formed in France.
Listen to a live performance of Lou Harrison’s Concerto for piano and gamelan, recorded at Cleveland Museum of Art in October 2017 (Harrison’s centennial celebration.) The work features new music pianist Sarah Cahill, on an instrument retuned to use the same scales as Indonesian gamelan, along with the Boston-based Gamelan Galak Tika, directed by Jody Diamond and Evan Ziporyn.
There’s also music by Balungan, a 13-member band of six adventurous French rock musicians and seven open-minded Javanese virtuoso gamelan players formed in the south of France. Their name, the Javanese word for “skeleton”, is also used to describe the riffs or core melody of a musical composition, (Bandcamp liner notes.) Balungan formed following French drummer Guigou Chenevier (of the band Etron Fou Leloublan) responding to a call for a gamelan workshop in Marseilles, (Expose.org); the recording, Kudu Bisa Kudu, was made live in 2017 at la Garance (Scène Nationale de Cavaillon).
Plus, hear music by Irish composer Benedict Schlepper-Connolly where viola passages float over a propulsive gamelan groove. Violist Nathan Sherman and percussionist/instrument builder Alex Petcu commissioned the piece, "One Thing I Know," titled after a poem by Edeltraud Eckert (Bandcamp notes.) - Caryn Havlik
