#4633, Unusual Covers

New Sounds | Jun 14, 2022

It’s an hour of unusual cover songs including chamber avant-rock group Ninth Planet (FKA Wild Rumpus) covering Radiohead, jazz guitarist Bill Frisell covers the bluesman Reverend Gary Davis, Ligeti String Quartet covers Tuvan and Sardinian songs, and a Tuvan throat singer performs Led Zeppelin.

New music ensemble Ninth Planet, created in 2019 as a merger of Wild Rumpus and Composers, Inc., combines contemporary chamber music and avant-rock in an arrangement of Radiohead's song, “Weird Fishes” by composer Dan VanHassel, who is also an assistant professor of composition specializing in electronic music.

And because it wouldn’t be a New Sounds covers show without some throat-singing, hear a Led Zeppelin song done up by Tuvan guitarist and throat singer, Albert Kuvezin, a founding member of the traditional Tuvan group Huun Huur Tu, who left to form the group Yat-Kha. There’s also music from Ligeti Quartet, a string quartet who eerily and skillfully emulate the human voice in versions of traditional songs of Tuva and Sardinia, which are usually sung by men. Those come from an album of arrangements by British composer Christian Mason, called Songbooks, Vol. 1. (The group promises two further collections of Songbooks, the first based on the Inuit Katajjaq singing of Northern Canada and the second on Umngqokolo singing from the Xhosa tradition in South Africa – both traditionally sung by women.)

Then, listen to music from US-born, India-raised, London-based drummer and tabla player Sarathy Korwar in an arrangement of music by harpist/pianist Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, together with the Upaj Collective, recorded at Church of Sound in London. Plus, listen to haunting, meditative and clever arrangements of music by the Krautrocker - Cluster and Harmonia cofounder- Hans-Joachim Roedelius by the clarinet and piano duo called Group Listening. - Caryn Havlik
