From the 2022 New York Guitar Festival at The Greene Space, hear American jazz guitarist and bandleader Bill Frisell. Also, there's music by Brazilian Badi Assad who is a guitarist, and…a singer, percussionist, keyboardist, and dancer.
Wikipedia says Bill Frisell “is an American jazz guitarist.” Well they got “American” and “guitarist” right. Frisell has indeed played jazz, but also country, rock, West African, classical, and lots of less easily defined styles of music. Widely considered to be one of the great guitarists of our time, he is the subject of a new biography called Bill Frisell: Beautiful Dreamer. Bill performs a flowing set in The Greene Space.
Younger sister of the great Brazilian guitar duo of Sergio & Odair Assad, Badi is not only a guitarist but also a singer and percussionist (sometimes using the guitar as a percussion instrument). She draws on elements of jazz, world music, and pop, and was co-curator of the 2014 edition of the New York Guitar Festival. She plays recent songs onstage with a travel-custom guitar. – John Schaefer
