#4666, New Approaches to the Piano Trio
Hear new approaches to music for the combination of piano, bass and drums, by Manchester-based GoGo Penguin, Matthew Shipp’s augmented trio, bass player Yosef Gutman's trio, and Danish duo Svaneborg Kardyb.
Hear the almost electronic sound out of the piano, and its manipulated insides in music from hybrid trio GoGo Penguin out of Manchester, England. Then, there’s music by New York pianist Matthew Shipp, with bassist William Parker, and drummer Gerald Cleaver (with added electronics by Chris Flam) on the quietly propulsive and majestic tune “Blood 2 the Brain”, (Pitchfork).
Listen to new music from a trio led by South African-born, Jerusalem-based bass player Yosef Gutman (Levitt), who, together with pianist Omri Mor and drummer Ofri Nehemya, create an organic flow, where the band “hints at Moroccan- Andalusian vocabulary or even making the piano sound like a kora.” (Gutrman Levitt, quoted in makingascene.org).
Also, hear the duo of Svaneborg Kardyb, who draw on Danish folk music and Scandinavian jazz influences, like Nils Frahm or Esbjörn Svennson combining minimalism, grooves, electronics, and Nordic atmospheres. Plus, music from e.s.t. (Esbjörn Svennson Trio), The Bad Plus (old lineup), and the trio Dawn of Midi, who somehow recreates the sounds of electronic music. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
