#4672, Renaissance Music in Modern Arrangements

New Sounds | Oct 18, 2023

Hear music drawing on Medieval and Renaissance sources by Irish soprano Caitriona O’Leary and Anakronos, Ukrainian composer and sound artist Heinali, the Hilliard Ensemble with Norwegian sax player Jan Garbarek, and more.

Hear a song for a time of plague- the Black Death of the mid-14th century - using texts from Baccaccio’s famous Decameron. It’s from a double-album called Citadel of Song by Irish soprano Caitriona O’Leary and her band Anakronos, where they combine medieval forms with modern sounds, like sax, electric guitar, global percussion, and live electronics. Also, listen to a medieval offertorium from the early music vocal group Orlando Consort in collaboration with jazz rock band Perfect Houseplants, from their record called “Extempore” – literally “out of time.”

There’s music by Ukrainian sound artist Heinali, (aka Oleg Shudeiko), where musicians playing Baroque fiddle and theorbo improvise over Bach-like flute lines, from his record, Madrigals, of music inspired by Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Then, hear from the Dowland Project, who take a modern approach to works by John Dowland, featuring John Potter from the Hilliard Ensemble. Plus, music from the Hilliard Ensemble in collaboration with Norwegian sax player Jan Garbarek, from their worldwide hit recording of medieval works, Officium. And more. - Caryn Havlik
