#4673, Lost
Hear music about being lost, truly at sea in works by the late American composer Ingram Marshall, by artist and musician Laurie Anderson, and by the late UK-based Jeremy Peyton-Jones.
From the late Ingram Marshall, hear his work, “Fog Tropes" for brass sextet and ambient sounds on tape, from Marshall’s time in the San Francisco Bay area, yet NOT a portrait of San Francisco Bay. Then, from the late British composer Jeremy Peyton-Jones, listen to music about about being lost and trying to find a sense of direction complete with nautical imagery, maps and charts, and flags as distress signals - his "North South East West".
Then, there’s music by musician and artist Laurie Anderson about being lost at sea, and music from the collaborative work between the Bang on a Can composers and the writer Deborah Artman, Lost Objects.
Plus, listen to a sample of a large-scale work inspired by the true-life tale of the free diver Natalia Molchanova, who descended into the ocean in 2015 and never resurfaced. The multimedia song cycle, Black Inscription, is a collaboration between violinist, vocalist and composer Carla Kihlstedt, drummer and composer/vocalist Matthias Bossi, and multi-instrumentalist/composer Jeremy Flower. - Caryn Havlik
