#4678, New Releases, Oct. 2022, With Steve Reich

New Sounds | Oct 31, 2022

It’s the most wonderful time of the month: the showcasing of some of the finest new music to come to into the ole' inboxes, and the studio. Hear new music by American minimalist and living legend, composer Steve Reich;  new music by “Arabian fuzz” collective Al-Qasar; Chicago-based drummer/composer Makaya McCraven; and India's premier sarod player Amjad Ali Khan together with Chinese pipa player Wu Man, and more.

American composer and living legend, Steve Reich presents a preview of a new work, “Traveler’s Prayer”, and some of his latest recording of Music for Ensemble and Orchestra, performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Susanna Mälkki. Traveler’s Prayer is sung in all Hebrew, with melodies taken from traditional sources, including the ornate style of Italian Jewish singing, and Yemenite Jews chanting microtonal psalms. In the work, Reich plays “fast and loose with canons” and inverting melodies, as he considers not only physical travel in conveyances in this world, but also traveling from this world to the next.
Traveler’s Prayer premieres on Nov. 1 at Carnegie Hall, featuring the Colin Currie Group and Synergy Vocals.

Also, listen to music by Middle Eastern psych collective Al-Qasar, and their “Arabian fuzz”, which incorporates near-eastern sounds, and North African trance rhythms. There’s also new music from Chicago-based drummer/producer/composer Makaya McCraven from his improvised-then-assembled style of writing, and an album called, In These Times. Listen also to some of an ongoing multimedia project featuring words and stories of disabled interviewees set within a complementary soundscape by Molly Joyce. Plus, a new collaboration from sarod virtuoso Amjad Ali Khan and Chinese pipa player Wu Man, and more. - Caryn Havlik
