#4714, Some Assembly Required

New Sounds | Jan 4, 2025

Hear music assembled, arranged, and sculpted (by studio magic) after the initial performances from drummer and composer Makaya McCraven, composer Jacob Cooper, and flutist, composer and vocalist Nathalie Joachim.

Listen to the latest from Chicago drummer, composer, bandleader, and organic beat scientist Makaya McCraven, “In These Times”, the title track from his 2022 album, an  11 song suite, created over 7+ years. On it, he has refined his formula of unstructured improvisations designed, arranged, and heavily edited into flowing compositions, with the help of some 15 different collaborators – harpist Brandee Younger, bassist Junius Paul, guitarist Jeff Parker, vibraphonist Joel Ross, and sax player Greg Ward, to name a few.

Also, hear music from a collaboration between Grammy-nominated flutist, composer, vocalist Nathalie Joachim and the 10th-grade class at Kaufman Music Center’s Special Music School. The music was made from a self-generated sound bank of musical material, with small groups working via Zoom, to create new pieces. There’s also music from American composer Jacob Cooper, whose work usually involves electronics and processing with acoustic instruments or voice. In his work, Terrain, listen to vocalists Jodie Landau and Theo Bleckmann, together with cellist Ashley Bathgate.

Then, listen to the duo Matmos and electronic music made from sampled plastic objects: a police riot shield, pvc pipe and broken vinyl records. Also, hear music by Yorkshire born composer and producer Kirk Barley, who in Makaya McCraven fashion, loops fragments of his own instrumental, electronic, and field-recorded sounds, assembling the tracks from edited improvisations, some of them enriched with live drums. Plus, music for theremin by Dorit Chrysler, in response to the artist Alexander Calder’s ever-changing mobiles, and more. - Caryn Havlik
