#4717, A Journey to Brazil

New Sounds | Mar 1, 2024

Listen to music that comes from, or looks to Brazil from the berimbau ensemble Arcomusical, guitarist Egberto Gismonti, and Brooklyn Rider plays music by Argentine-born Osvaldo Golijov.

Hear a recent work for Brooklyn Rider by Argentine-born composer Osvaldo Golijov, which has the titles of some of its movements in Portuguese. The five-movement string quartet, Um Día Bom, depicts “a life from morning to midnight and beyond, but as if told to children.” One of the movements is based on the Basqiuiat painting, “Riding with Death”), and the closing movement was written around the time that the legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea died. Golijov also speaks of being personally inspired by Brooklyn Rider as musicians, and there might actually be no connection to Brazil at all, admits host John Schaefer…

Also, listen to DeKalb, IL-based band Arcomusical, a berimbau ensemble (directed by percussionist Gregory Beyer) dedicated to championing the voice of the Afro-Brazilian musical bow (sometimes recognizable in capoeira). Listen to the first movement of a six-part suite, Emigre and Exile: I. Mother Harp, composed for them by bassist Matt Ulery.

Then, hear music from Brazilian guitarist and composer Egberto Gismonti together with the late Brazilian percussionist, vocalist and berimbau master Nana Vasconcelos. Also listen to music by the innovative trio Codona (Collin Walcott, Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos) from their self-titled record which brings together Brazil, Africa, and India using Western jazz and various Eastern idioms. And more. - Caryn Havlik
