#4719, With Lisel (Eliza Bagg)
As a member of Roomful of Teeth, the trio Modern Medieval, the indie pop band, Pavo Pavo, and as the solo artist Lisel, Eliza Bagg moves between different musical worlds. When recording and performing as Lisel, Eliza Bagg creates hybrid music that blends her classical vocal training with electronic production techniques found in hyperpop (like the late artist/musician/producer SOPHIE.)
Taking as a starting point Renaissance polyphony and Medieval music like Hildegard von Bingen, Thomas Tallis, Tomás Luis de Victoria, and Carlo Gesualdo, Eliza Bagg knows that the ‘bass drop’ has been around since music of that time. Through her wide variety of musical experience, she also understands how the voice has infinite colors available to it and is keen to find different ways to make vocal sounds. From all styles of vocalizing - Bel canto or Broadway belting to intimately whispering or singing closely into a microphone – Eliza Bagg realizes creative choices have changed because of the technology that we can access. She is a musician who has absorbed the capabilities of technology into her own music through experiments with Ableton, adding ambient electric sounds and aesthetics, and hyperpop elements as well -and as she says, “I am going for a maximalist sound, but my sources of inspiration also include minimalists.” [Bandcamp]
Hear work from Lisel’s Patterns for Auto-Tuned Voices and Delay, Eliza Bagg’s latest album of studio creations inspired by Cocteau Twins, Charlie XCX, Victoria, Meredith Monk, and Hildegard von Bingen. Running Ableton, and a Novation Launch Pad for the processing effects, Eliza Bagg performs some of these studio creations, live on New Sounds. - Caryn Havlik
