#4731, Music for Recorders and Other Flute-Like Instruments
There are no western metal flutes here, rather, hear music for Japanese shakuhachi, bamboo flute, recorders, ocarina, and things that sound like flutes in music by Mexican-born composer Daniel Catán and Romanian-German composer Violeta Dinescu.
Listen to music by Mexcian-born composer Daniel Catán, who lived in Japan for two years, but now resides in the United States. Listen to “Encantamiento” for two alto recorders, which was inspired by music of the Japanese bamboo flute, the shakuhachi. Also, listen to a work for two shakuhachi flutes, Shika no Tōne (Kinko Ryū) 鹿の遠音or “Distant Call of the Deer”.
Then, listen to music by Romanian pianist and composer Violeta Dinescu for tenor recorders, called “Immaginabile”, along with music by Xochimoti, aka American ethnomusicologist Jim Berenholtz and Aztec descendant / wisdom keeper Mazatl Galindo. The Wire has called it "Doomy leftfield new age experimentalism vibing at ruined temples and sacred sites." Also, hear music by composer Antonio Zepeda, who sometimes looks to pre-Colombian indigenous music from Mexico. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
