It's the most wonderful time of the month. Hear new music from Brazilian cellist and vocalist Dom La Nena, multi-instrumentalist Daniel Rotem’s synth and sax creations, and Nigerian spiritual highlife from Alhaji Waziri Oshomah. There's also new music from Tuareg band Tinariwen recorded at an oasis in southern Algeria.
Listen to a preview of music by Brazilian composer and cellist, Dom La Nena from her record, Leon, named for her cello, which she has played since she was eleven years old. There’s also work from Israeli-born saxophonist Daniel Rotem, who playfully combines synths and recording techniques, crafting a sonic landscape in which his horn can move, distort, and transform.
Then, there’s music from southern Nigeria, and the Etsako Super Star, Alhaji Waziri Oshomah. A devout Muslim and a pillar in his local community in Edo State, Waziri makes “a unique form of dance music that’s fused with local folk styles, pan-Nigerian highlife and Western pop”. His lyrics “draw on Judeo-Christian and traditional imagery to speak of piety and reverence, while also conveying Islamic values such as humility and modesty”, (Luaka Bop World Spirituality Classics series.)
Hear new music from Grammy-winning Tuareg band Tinariwen, and their latest, Amatssou which takes into account Mali’s ongoing political and social turmoil. Plus, bowed string music, electronically enhanced, and improvised by violinist Richard Carr, violinist/violist Caleb Burhans, and cellist Clarice Jensen, from their April release, August Dreams.
