Hear flute music by Marcos Balter for Claire Chase, part of her project, Density 2036. Plus, Bansuri flute from Rakesh Chaurasia, recorders and ocarinas from John Luther Adams, and more.
Flutist, collaborator, curator, and educator Claire Chase has been commissioning, playing, and recording new works for flute since founding the International Contemporary Ensemble in 2001. She’s currently deep into the 23-year commissioning project, Density 2036, in honor of what will be the centenary of Edgard Varèse’s 1936 flute solo, Density 21.5. Hear one of these works by New York-based composer Marcos Balter, after the rustic Greek god, Pan, patron of shepherds.
There’s also new music by Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia, which combines Indian and Western Classical music, Jazz and Bluegrass. It’s from the record, As We Speak, a “sonic tapestry of banjo, tabla, double bass, and bansuri”, (Bela Fleck website).
Then, listen to portions of music by John Luther Adams, and his songbirdsongs, based on Adams’ observations and studies of actual bird songs, scored for various ensembles of piccolos, ocarinas, flutes and percussion (Mode Records.) And more. - Caryn Havlik
