Hear music from the 2023 New York Guitar Festival, from lap-tapping innovator Yasmin Williams, For Living Lovers, the acoustic duo of Brandon Ross and Stomu Takeishi, and Louis Cato, bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
There's music by Yasmin Williams, the lap-tapping inventive finger-style guitarist who mostly plays from above. She shares a set of original tunes, which may or may not involve a rubber hammer, a kalimba, tap shoes, a capo, strumming, plucking, and tapping. Her work is simply mesmerizing. Word is she also plays kora.
Then, listen to duo music by For Living Lovers, comprised of the improvising guitarist, composer, and educator Brandon Ross and experimental bass player Stomu Takeishi. Hear their music which makes use of extended techniques and ebows, -with one tune played on a 6-stringed banjo- to make unusual combinations of sounds for their set.
Plus, listen to a tune from Louis Cato, bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert together with drummer Joe Saylor. They adapt a traditional spiritual made famous by Mississippi John Hurt, “You Gotta Walk That Lonesome Valley”. - Caryn Havlik
