#4772, Music Associated With the Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War, which began on either July 17 or 18 of 1936 (depending on the source), continues to be a musically fertile ground from which artists draw inspiration. Hear music by Brooklyn-born band Barbez, Kronos Quartet arranging Pete Seeger, electric violinist Tracy Silverman, and drummer Bobby Previte.
In July 1936, a military coup led by several fascist generals was launched against the democratically elected government of the Spanish Republic. The coup failed, but its plotters, aided by Hitler and Mussolini, continued their effort, eventually defeating the Republic in the three-year-long Spanish Civil War. Though the Spanish government was abandoned by the Western powers, 35,000 volunteers from fifty-two countries, including 2,800 Americans who came to be called the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, rushed to Spain to fight fascism, (Alba-valb.org)

Hear a song about the international group of volunteers who fought the fascists, aka the Abraham Lincoln Brigade or the15th Brigade, from the 2017 album, For Those Who Came After: Songs of Resistance from the Spanish Civil War. Then, hear music inspired by the visual art of both Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró from this time. From electric violinist Tracy Silverman, hear “Picasso: Guernica” inspired by the painting that was a response to the 1937 bombing of the village of Guernica in northern Spain. Plus, listen to selections from the work by composer and drummer Bobby Previte, The 23 Constellations of Joan Miró. These musical miniatures were inspired by the visual art created by the painter around the time of the Spanish Civil War and during his stressful time in the early 1940's, escaping World War II. -Caryn Havlik
