#4775, New Releases, July 2023

New Sounds | Jul 31, 2023

It’s that time of the month when we showcase exciting new releases. Hear new music from UK artist Joel Nathaniel Pike, also known as Tiny Leaves. Plus, saxophonist, multireedist, and composer Colin Stetson has a new album featuring Brìghde Chaimbeul and Iarla Ó Lionáird. Finally, Lawrence English and Lea Bertucci team up in their album, Chthonic.

We start with the land. Mynd is a new release from Tiny Leaves, the alter ego of English composer Joel Nathaniel Pike. He uses field recordings from the Shropshire countryside intermixed with strings and lyrical piano to create entrancing soundscapes. Tiny Leaves gathered the recordings with an old tape recorder as a part of his residency with the National Trust at The Long Mynd, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Then, we move to the sea with Colin Stetson’s new album, When we were that what wept for the sea. This album was created after the unexpected passing of Stetson’s father. It’s his longest album yet, coming in at over 70 minutes, and features Iarla Ó Lionáird on vocals, Brìghde Chaimbeul on Scottish smallpipes, and Toby Summerfield and Matt Combs on guitars and strings, respectively. In tonight’s excerpts, you’ll hear the melodic speaking and singing voice of Irish vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird.

Finally, we go underground. Chthonic is the result of a long-distance collaboration by Australian composer Lawrence English and American sound artist Lea Bertucci. The two met in 2019 at the Novas Frequencia festival in Rio de Janeiro. The pair were inspired by pressure, density, and movement of both the Earth and sound. You’ll hear the combination of these influences in the track “Geology of Fire.” - Laura Boyman
