#4775, Portraits of the Land, Sea, and Underworld
Hear music on land from UK artist Tiny Leaves (aka Joel Nathaniel Pike). There's music on sea from saxophonist, multi-reedist, and composer Colin Stetson, featuring bagpiper Brìghde Chaimbeul and vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird. Finally, music from underground by Lawrence English and Lea Bertucci on their album, Chthonic.
We start with the land, and Mynd, the album from Tiny Leaves, the alter ego of English composer Joel Nathaniel Pike. He uses field recordings from the Shropshire countryside intermixed with strings and lyrical piano to create entrancing soundscapes. Tiny Leaves gathered the recordings with an old tape recorder as a part of his residency with the National Trust at The Long Mynd, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Then, we move to the sea with Colin Stetson’s 2023 album When we were that what wept for the sea. This album was created after the unexpected passing of Stetson’s father. The record features Iarla Ó Lionáird on vocals, Brìghde Chaimbeul on Scottish smallpipes, and Toby Summerfield and Matt Combs on guitars and strings, respectively.
Finally, we go underground. Chthonic is the result of a long-distance collaboration by Australian composer Lawrence English and American sound artist Lea Bertucci. The two met in 2019 at the Novas Frequencia festival in Rio de Janeiro. The pair were inspired by pressure, density, and movement of both the Earth and sound. You’ll hear the combination of these influences in the track “Geology of Fire.” - Laura Boyman
