It's the most wonderful time of the month! Hear the latest newest work that has reached our earholes. There’s music by Black Market Brass from Minneapolis that looks to Fela Kuti; acoustic music by Tuareg guitarist Bombino; and a film score by British composer Jocelyn Pook. Plus, hear music by English gyil (Ghanaian xylophone) player and percussionist Bex Burch with Chicago-based collaborators.
From Minneapolis, listen to Afrobeaty grooves with heavy, hypnotic, sci-fi sounds from Black Market Brass. There’s a surprising acoustic offering from Bombino, a kickass Tuareg guitarist from Niger. Then, listen to the latest from English composer Jocelyn Pook (Eyes Wide Shut, The Wife, Brick Lane, The Merchant of Venice) and her score to the Spanish horror film Tin & Tina.
Also, preview music by percussionist Bex Burch, a player of the Ghanaian xylophone, the gyil. She unleashes her “messy minimalism” sound, made in collaboration with Chicago-based musicians and improvisers Tortoise drummer Dan Bitney and Ben LaMar Gay, along with woodwind player Rob Frye, double bassist Anna Butterss, and violinist Macie Stewart. Her full record, called There is only love and fear, is due out in October 2023.
Plus, listen to new work informed by classical chamber, jazz, extreme metal, and electronic music by GRAMMY-nominated pianist and composer Pascal Le Boeuf from an album, Ritual Being. There's also vocoder-enhanced fractured art-pop by Brooklyn-based composer Cassie Wieland, recording as Vines, and more. - Caryn Havlik
