#4787, Songs of (And By) the Wind
Named after Aeolus, the ancient Greek god of the wind, an Aeolian harp, or wind harp is a musical instrument that is played by the wind, (Wikipedia). Listen to many works either played by the wind, or involving wind by sax player and sound artist Lea Bertucci, American composer John Luther Adams, and pipa player Yufeng Chung.
Hear artist, sax player, and composer Lea Bertucci activate a cavernous grain silo in Buffalo, NY on “Wind Piece” from her 2019 release, Resonant Field. Then, there’s a piece from Norwegian saxophone player Jan Garbarek accompanied by a wind harp, capturing the sound of the Fjords of Norway as musical drone. Listen also to music by Taiwanese pipa player Yufeng Chung that incorporates Indonesian gamelan, in a work, "Angin-Angin (The Wind, The Wind)."
There’s also music by American composer John Luther Adams who is known for involving natural landscapes – for many years, those of his home state, Alaska. From a 2022 release, listen to a work for highly-processed Aeolian harp, recorded in the Arctic in the summer of 1989, called Houses of the Wind.
Plus, listen to Dario Domigues, a South American flute master, who was part of an entire album and film, Vor Der Flut (before the flood), recorded in a drinking water reservoir below the city of Cologne, Germany. The huge 20 million liter cistern was emptied of water for cleaning back in 1984, for four weeks, and has a 40-some second echo. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
