Cellist Ashley Bathgate, who performed and toured with the Bang on a Can All-Stars for 10 years, is an adventurous new music champion who creates “a dynamic energy exchange with her audience” as she builds on that chemistry. Her “ground-breaking sounds and techniques, break the mold of a cello's traditionally perceived voice,” (Bathgate’s bio). For this New Sounds, listen to cellist Ashley Bathgate, recorded for the New Sounds Live concerts at National Sawdust in December 2023, as she plays a work by Dutch-based Australian composer Kate Moore, and music by LA-based Indian-American composer and teacher Anuj Bhutani, “On Letting Go”.

Listen to her virtuosic, swirling rendition of the Philip Glass work “Mad Rush”, originally written in 1978 for an organ of the cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York on the occasion of the Dalai Lama's first U.S. public address.
