#4840 New Releases, January 2024
Hear the latest, newest music from Chicago’s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Montreal-based Allison Burik, and the brother duo, Saramaccan Sound from the South American country of Suriname,
Listen to Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, led by legendary Chicago multi-percussionist & composer Kahil El’Zabar (one of the leaders of spiritual jazz today), with Corey Wilkes on trumpet & Alex Harding on baritone sax, in an inventive Ancient / Future Music arrangement of a Miles Davis tune, “All Blues”. It’s from the record, Open Me, A Higher Consciousness of Sound and Spirit, due in March which celebrates their half-century presence within the continuum of Great Black Music, (Bandcamp).
Drawing on folk, ambient, and improvised music, Montreal-based saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, and improviser Allison Burik layers textural phrases of alto sax and bass clarinet, field recordings (especially those captured during their residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland), subtle electronic treatments, and even guitar (both from Burik themself and their Umbrella Pine collaborator Magdalena Abrego), on their latest release, Realm. There’s also music from French composer and electronic musician (and fourth-world music legend) Ariel Kalma, together with modular synthesist Jeremiah Chiu & violist Marta Sofia Honer, based in improvisation, and realized by collage-based editing, from their record, The Closest Thing to Silence.
There’s also music from Palestinian composer, arranger, educator; and viola and buzuq player Ramzi Aburedwan and the Ensemble Dal’Ouna who combine traditional Arab instruments including the bouzuk, the oud, and percussion with viola and accordion, and add medieval and jazz accents. Plus, listen to music from the brother duo Saramaccan Sound from the Amazon region of Suriname. They write acoustic songs sung in Saramaccan (the language with the most African elements from the Americas), and address topics of the rising tides and floods in the area due to global warming, on their Ian Brennan-recorded debut. That, and more. – Caryn Havlik
