#4841, Global Pop
There's global pop music from Zambia, Tuva, and Ethiopia. Also, Dutch band Nusantara Beat who look to Indonesia, Iranian singer Mamak Khadem with a Macedonian brass band, and more.
Hear music from Dutch band Nusantara Beat who combine the traditional sounds of Indonesian gamelan music while bringing in innovative psychedelic pop grooves. Then, listen to the experimental folk of French band Sourdurent, who sing in Occitan and “their music can take you to North Africa, the Middle East or even the kind of fictitious hybrid where once 3 Mustaphas 3 cavorted.” (Songlines). Listen to a tune from 3 Mustaphas 3, just for good measure – one that looks to Macedonia. There’s also music from well-traveled Persian singer Mamak Khadem, featuring a Macedonian brass band, the Agusevi Dzambo Orkestar.
Listen to the traditional Turkish folk and Anatolian rock, all psyched and jazzed up by Amsterdam-based Altin Gün. Then, hear music from Tuvan singer, electric guitarist and experimentalist Albert Kuvezin and his punk band Yat-Kha, and the intricate throat-singing traditions of that region. Plus, there’s music by London-based song-sculptress Namvula, who blends the folk and urban traditions of her Zambian homeland with London’s eclectic music scene. And more. - Caryn Havlik
