#4845, Art/Folk Songs

New Sounds | Mar 18, 2025

Hear songs rooted in folk music, with art song or classical music connections from composer/vocalist/banjo player Rhiannon Giddens and an adapted opera aria, from the UK folk collective Spell Songs; and Irish "supergroup", The Gloaming.

Singer, fiddler, banjo player, and composer Rhiannon Giddens sings Nina Simone's arrangement and revision of the aria, “Black Swan” from Gian Carlo Menotti's opera, The Medium. There's also music from the collective Spell Songs, featuring Scottish singer Julie Fowlis and Senegalese-born kora virtuoso Seckou Keita, Rachel Newton’s harp and Beth Porter’s cello, sings text – meditations on nature - by writer Robert MacFarlane. Also, hear the late Peter Schickele’s setting of e.e. cummings’ text, as sung by Joan Baez.

Hear music from vocalist/composer Caroline Shaw and the musicians of So Percussion from their collaborative album Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part. On it, Caroline Shaw sets the text from the folk hymn “I'll Fly Away” to an electric drone, tolling piano and an ebow inside the piano. Then, chamber music meets folk music in “Song 44” from Irish “supergroup” The Gloaming – comprised of gifted Irish fiddler Martin Hayes, the late guitarist Dennis Cahill, Irish master of the Norwegian hardanger fiddle Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, sean-nós master singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, and pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman). And folk music meets the sounds of Indian classical music in the collaborative trio of James Yorkston, Jon Thorne, and Suhail Yusuf Khan. Their hybrid sounds feature Khan on sarangi (a box-shaped cello from India), Thorne on double bass, and Yorkston principally on guitar. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
