#4853, New Releases, Feb. 2024

New Sounds | Feb 29, 2024

Hear Moroccan psychedelic Gnawa blues by Bab L’Bluz, art music by bassist-composer Ruth Goller, Leeds-based sitarist/composer Jasdeep Singh Degun, and German techno marching band Meute.

Hear new music by French-Moroccan power quartet, Bab L' Bluz and the psychedelic blues, funk and rock combined with Gnawan trance rhythms. Hear 'Imazighen', from their forthcoming record, Swaken; the song's refrain ('We (North African natives) are all true Amazighs') is sung in Tamazight, the language of the Amazigh Berbers, Mansour's ancestors.(Bandcamp liner notes). Then there’s hypnotic techno made of brass and drums from 11-piece Hamburg, Germany-based Meute.

Listen also to music from London-based, Italian-born composer, bassist, and vocalist Ruth Goller, from her new album, SKYLLUMINA, made in collaboration with many different drummers. Hear the swooping and cascading layers of Goller’s voice, combined with angular bass riffs and drums from Tom Skinner (The Smile, Sons of Kemet), on “Below my skin”. Also, listen to new music from Leeds-based sitarist and composer Jasdeep Singh Degun, with his “Lament” from his opera, Orpheus.

There’s also new music for layers of Disklavier by pianist, producer, and composer Kelly Moran from her forthcoming record, Moves in the Field, as well as music by Michael Gordon for layers of violinist Rakhi Singh, who is also the co-founder of the Manchester Collective. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
