Listen to joyful collaborative work by Istanbul born performing artist, producer, composer and instrument builder Berke Can Özcan together with Brooklyn-based baritone saxophonist Jonah Parzen-Johnson. The music from their 2024 release, It Was Always Time, “builds on itself, weaving layers of found-sound samples over acoustic percussion to frame poignant saxophone melodies that melt into rich synth interludes”, (Bandcamp.) Then, hear solo music by Jonah Parzen-Johnson which pairs analog synth elements and sound-designed samples of his own sax for percussive energy and pulse.
Also, there’s propulsive music from Canadian composer Nicole Lizée, a turntablist deeply influenced by DJ culture. Her varied musical palette ranges from jazz, krautrock, metal, and improvisation to pop music, contemporary music, and everything in between. Hear music by Benjamin Lanz, aka Lanz, with sax player and bandleader Kris Allen; and in the supergroup LNZNDRF (Scott and Bryan Devendorf of The National, and Ben Lanz and Aaron Arntz of Beirut) whose music sounds something like CAN-influenced drone-fuzz psych jams.
