#4946, With Nico Muhly, "To The Body"
American composer and musician Nico Muhly presents some of his work, "To The Body", a multi-part soundscape with strings, piano, voice, and sound-processing. The immersive piece was created for the exhibition by Yu Hong called "Another One Bites the Dust" at the 60th Venice Biennale. There are ten sections, each with a fluid time period, as it is played without pause and repeated without seam. As a composer, Muhly has continually created an unpredictable mix of the electronic and acoustic, sacred and secular, using ideas from rock, folk, minimalism as well as church and classical music. He’s also written music for film, tv, and stage, in addition to The Metropolitan Opera-commissioned Two Boys (2011) and Marnie (2018).
This work, “To The Body” contains fragments of Dietrich Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri (1680) within - disembodied from their original context and played by three overlaid violas da gamba, three voices, piano, celeste, and electronic manipulation. Muhly says that he has aimed to create a structure that is thrilling and meditative, but one where the composer doesn’t control how the work heard. The work also plays with space, anticipating how a listener can wander through the multiple speakers, experiencing memory, contortion, and recontextualization; which act hand-in-hand with Yu Hong’s work. His other most recent release is the soundtrack for season two (he also did the soundtrack of season one) of Apple TV’s serialization of the epic novel Pachinko.
Then, hear some of the original score by the Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Caroline Shaw for Ken Burns’s new two-part documentary, LEONARDO da VINCI. Shaw’s score features performances by Roomful of Teeth, Attacca Quartet, Sō Percussion, and bass player John Patitucci; it also marks the first time a Ken Burns film has featured an entirely original score. - Caryn Havlik
