Hear an hour of music recorded on various church organs in northern Europe, in works by Icelandic duo Translations, from Swedish organist and songwriter Anna von Hausswolff, German electronic artist Secret of Elements, and by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.
Listen to new work by the Icelandic duo of violin and organ, Translations from their album Hik - an old Icelandic word for hesitation. Arngerður María Árnadóttir and Una Sveinbjarnardóttir created the record by improvising in Laugarneskirkja in Reykjavi´k, as a conversation between the violin and the organ, reacting and coexisting in sound. Hear the title track, and “August 7th”. Then, there’s music from Swedish singer, keyboardist and songwriter Anna von Hausswolff, whose 2015 album Ceremony is a bit of dramatic pipe-organ driven art-pop music with underpinnings of the drone metal wizards Sunn O))). Recorded in her hometown of Gothenburg on the church organ of the vast Annedalkyrkan, the music is grave and intense, and at times, sinister; sometimes Christian fundamentalists have issue with her playing of a church organ.
Then, hear music from German composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Johann Pätzold aka Secret of Elements where all keyboards are fair game, from piano and organ to groovy synths. The music reflects on challenges faced while aiding the Mediterranean refugee crisis, with a piece built around an Indian mantra but performed on church organ as a tribute to a small child who drowned. Plus, listen to Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s setting of De Profundis, as sung by The Hilliard Ensemble, together with organ & gong, and more. - Caryn Havlik
